About me
Brendan Madden is the Director, Enterprise Risk at Girl Guides of Canada. He was active in the expedition-based adventure education field for 30 years, and held senior management and instructor positions at both Outward Bound Canada and NOLS. Brendan is a risk management trainer at NOLS and an occasional consultant. Brendan continues to be fascinated by the confluence of systems thinking and human-factor elements in outdoor risk management, especially as they pertain to building resilience to climate change. Brendan is currently enrolled in the MA in Disaster and Emergency Management program at Royal Roads University, and is researching a thesis on wildfire entrapment avoidance for outdoor programs.Shana Tarter is the managing director of the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s Diploma in Climate Medicine. Previously she served as the Associate Director of NOLS Wilderness Medicine and chaired the Wilderness Risk Management Conference Steering committee. She has been teaching and presenting on wilderness medicine and organizational risk management for three decades. She is excited to connect her work in the climate and health space to the unique challenges of operating in remote environments.
