When the Unthinkable Happens: Fostering Post-Traumatic Growth through Lament, Learning, and Love

In this workshop, we will reflect on the 1986 Mt. Hood climb tragedy and its impact at Oregon Episcopal School and consider how a community moved through trauma and tragedy with lament, learning, and love. Over the past 40 years, OES has deepened its commitment to experiential education through thoughtful, developmentally appropriate programming. The School completed an independent institutional review of the 1986 Mt. Hood Climb which included recommendations to strengthen a focus on oversight, clear roles and responsibilities, formalized risk assessment, and promote a culture of communication and accountability. Through story and case study, we will explore the importance of institutional responsibility, trauma-informed leadership, thoughtful risk management, and the enduring power of experiential education to shape resilient communities.
