SUMMARY:Developing Operating Thresholds for Heat and Wildfire Smoke in Outdoor Programs (FREE to attend & walk-ins welcomed)
DESCRIPTION:Free to attend! Walk-ins welcomed\, and pre-registration appreciated.\n\nThis session brings together outdoor industry professionals to develop consensus guidelines for managing two growing risks: extreme heat and wildfire smoke. Participants will collaborate to define practical operating thresholds for when to modify\, postpone\, or cancel trips\, as well as clear protocols for responding when conditions deteriorate in the field. Through facilitated discussion and breakouts\, participants will compare their own operating guidelines alongside published resources to inform a shared approach. Working in small groups\, they will apply these inputs to specific scenarios to draft practical thresholds and response strategies. By the end\, participants will co-create a draft framework of actionable thresholds and response strategies that can be adapted across programs. This session is designed for guides\, program managers\, risk managers\, and organizational leaders seeking to move from ad hoc decision-making toward shared standards in an era of increasing climate variability.

SUMMARY:Befriending the Nervous System. A Body Centered Approach to Managing Difficult Situations (FREE to attend & walk-ins welcomed)
DESCRIPTION:Free to attend! Walk-ins welcomed\, and pre-registration appreciated.\n\nHave you ever felt paralyzed by fear in the wilderness? Or felt the need to agree with others against what your intuition was telling you? Have you experienced a difficult or terrifying situation that has been hard to deal with\, even months or years after the event? When crisis situations arise\, our brains sense the stress and the nervous system reacts\, often without our conscious input. These reactions may be unhelpful in a crisis. Instead\, when we can connect - to our body\, our environment and others - we will respond more calmly and effectively. Join me in an experiential exploration of the nervous system and how we can harness it’s power to help us stabilize any situation in the mountains and beyond.

SUMMARY:Exhibitor Showcase\, Happy Hour\, & Conference Kick-Off
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy this energizing event to kick-start your WRMC experience! Light refreshments provided and cash bar available. Network and learn from over thirty industry and professional partners and meet other attendees before the Opening Session. \n\nAnd be sure to also check out the Poster Presentations that will be stationed in the Exhibit Hall:\n\nCrisis at Sea: Managing a Partial Sinking and Its Aftermath | Andrew Arter\nThis case study examines a non-fatal incident within our organization that resulted in the partial sinking of a program vessel. On July 21\, 2025\, a Sail Caribbean vessel operating off the coast of a Caribbean island struck an underwater rock formation and began taking on water rapidly. Fortunately\, no participants were injured\; however\, the incident resulted in significant property damage and generated substantial public attention on social media. This case study explores how the organization responded to the incident\, including how we ensured all participants were able to safely complete their program with minimal disruption. It proceeds in chronological order\, outlining the actions taken\, the decisions made\, and those that were not taken—along with the reasoning behind them. The analysis focuses on key takeaways related to managing social media\, coordinating with various stakeholders\, and implementing long-term measures to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.\n\nPreventative Search and Rescue (PSAR) for Rock Climbing Land Managers | Daniel Cassidy\nJoin Mohonk Preserve\, home of "The Gunks\," Chief Ranger for a presentation breaking down and detailing their first of its kind climbing specific Preventative Search and Rescue program. The Mohonk Preserve has been partnering with the folks from Accidents in North American Climbing and their research associates to develop a multi-faceted\, evidence based program to help reduce climbing related incidents and accidents in the Shawangunks.&nbsp\;\n\nThrough the Lookng Glass - how culture inflects messages and expectations around risk management | Blaire Modic\nThis interactive session supports field-based practitioners working in cross-cultural environments\, where risk management must be balanced with diverse cultural perspectives among key collaborators.\nThis session examines how staff training and risk management protocols are inflected by cultural differences\, sometimes leading to misalignment between team members\, as well as between field practitioners and central office leadership.\n\nHofstede’s cultural dimensions provide a theoretical framework. One especially useful dimension is “external control\,” or the degree to which members of a cultural group believe outcomes are dictated by forces outside their control.\nParticipants will examine the nature of these challenges and their potential impact on program effectiveness and compliance with risk management protocols while respecting the inherent value of a culturally diverse team. Through storytelling and practical examples\, the session highlights strategies for anticipating and bridging cultural gaps while maintaining the integrity of risk management practices. The session equips participants with tools to foster clearer communication\, stronger collaboration\, and more culturally sensitive program delivery.\n\nWFR/WFA Patient Assessment en Español | Sergio Juarez\nIf you are a WFR/WFA already AND speak Spanish at a conversational level\, you are invited to come learn/practice the Patient Assessment System in Spanish. We will review the PA vocabulary and some of the most common answers we can expect from our patients.Then\, we will have some scenarios to practice. The objective is to help us feel ready to provide help even when there may be a language barrier.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:“No one was injured” (or were they?) Reducing risk factors & increasing protective factors for psychological stress injury following adverse field incidents
DESCRIPTION:First aid scenarios\, natural disasters\, and accidents can result in unstable scenes and medical first aid needs. But what about those who witness an adverse event\, those who provide critical first aid\, or groups that are part of a “near miss”? While most people who experience a potentially traumatic event do not go on to experience lasting post-traumatic stress symptoms\, the potential for psychological injury\, burnout\, trauma\, and stress injuries is real\, and can be mitigated with awareness and action. Here we explore 1) Risk factors for psychological stress and trauma injuries following an adverse event\, 2) Protective factors that increase psychological resilience\, and 3) Simple awareness and action steps that organizations can incorporate in their risk management plans to mitigate risk factors and increase protective factors for staff\, participants\, and others affected by a potentially traumatic field incident.

SUMMARY:Not Your Typical Incident: Applying Incident Command to “Non-Normal” Administrative Crises
DESCRIPTION:Incident command systems are typically designed for field-based emergencies\, but what happens when the crisis is administrative? Organizations also face “non-normal” incidents such as government shutdowns\, sudden funding disruptions\, regional natural disasters\, and pandemic impacts that require rapid\, coordinated responses across teams. This session explores how incident command structure (ICS) can be adapted to manage complex\, organization-wide disruptions. Using a case study from the Student Conservation Association (SCA)\, presenters will walk through how ICS principles were applied to stabilize operations\, reallocate resources\, and support staff\, participants\, and partners during last year’s federal government shutdown and AmeriCorps grant terminations. Participants will learn a practical framework for structuring response efforts\, clarifying roles\, and identifying key operational risks. Through guided discussion and hands-on activities\, attendees will begin developing a tailored response plan for an administrative incident relevant to their own organization. This session is ideal for program leaders\, risk managers\, and operations staff seeking to strengthen organizational resilience beyond traditional field incidents.

SUMMARY:Accimapping: Theory to Practice
DESCRIPTION:Systems based risk management has been a leading theory and approach explored at WRMC and throughout the outdoor education risk management community over the past decade. Specifically\, accimaps\, and accimapping\, has been shown to be a leading new practice to better understand how accidents occur and how to better inspect systems within and beyond organizations. In particular\, accimapping are a useful tool to identify "systems hazards\," which might not be immediately visible in a linear\, chain-of-risk approach to incident analysis. This presentation will look to show how a collaborative accimapping exercise after an incident occurs in the field (with both administration and field instructors) can give an organization tangible action steps and tools to reduce risk in the future. We will look at a specific incident that occurred during the Wild Rockies Field Institute's (WRFI) 2024 season\, dig into the process of debriefing and accimapping together\, and look at some of the outcomes and changes WRFI has made since then to address systemic issues uncovered.

SUMMARY:Neurospicy: Supporting Neurodivergent Staff and Participants
DESCRIPTION:Neurodivergent participants on our outdoor trips are becoming more and more common\, and that’s amazing! This shows that differing brains feel embraced by the outdoor industry\, and don’t feel siloed into solely participating in Wilderness Therapy. With more participants than ever (and leaders!) identifying as neurodivergent in our outdoor programs\, it is imperative administrators and field staff seek to anticipate the needs and unique risks of this broad population so we may best support them before\, during\, and after their trip. We’ll learn about Universal Design Framework\, Essential Eligibility Criteria\, and ADA Reasonable Accommodations. As we delve in\, we’ll quickly learn how adapting outdoor programs using this lens actually improves our program for all\, not just some.

SUMMARY:Balancing Inclusion and Compliance: Strategies for Meeting AEE Standards Amid Political Change
DESCRIPTION:Expanded research into human dimensions of risk management has revealed that psychological safety and a sense of belonging are central to improving program learning outcomes and strengthening an organization’s safety culture. AEE has integrated these insights into its accreditation framework\, which includes seven standards that address psychological safety\, diversity\, and inclusion. AEE also requires accredited organizations to comply with all federal\, state\, and local laws and regulations. The current sociopolitical climate has created some conflict for organizations and their ability to comply with and report on the applicable standards. This workshop will review the seven standards that address inclusion\, diversity\, and psychological safety and will discuss various approaches organizations are taking to navigate them within their local contexts. Attendees will consider how to implement prudent legal strategies that continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of staff and participants

SUMMARY:Making the Call: Climate Risk Decision-Making in the Field
DESCRIPTION:As climate-driven hazards intensify\, outdoor program leaders are increasingly required to make high-stakes decisions under uncertain and rapidly changing conditions. This session explores practical decision-making frameworks that support effective risk management before\, during\, and after climate-related incidents. Using case studies like wildfires\, flash flooding\, and extreme heat\, participants will examine how critical decisions are made in the field\, what information is available at the time\, and how outcomes are shaped by those choices. Through facilitated discussion\, attendees will analyze key decision points such as when to modify or cancel programming\, how to establish evacuation triggers\, and how to balance competing risks to participants\, staff\, and organizational continuity. The session emphasizes transferable tools and frameworks that can be applied across camps\, conservation corps\, guiding operations\, and other outdoor programs. Participants will leave with actionable strategies to strengthen decision-making processes\, improve communication under pressure\, and build more adaptive\, climate-informed risk management systems.

SUMMARY:How a Climber Got Convicted of Manslaughter
DESCRIPTION:A climbing date gone bad\, a fatal winter ascent\, and a criminal conviction: A case study in how bad decision-making led to a manslaughter conviction. In February 2026\, a climber was convicted of gross negligence manslaughter for the death of his girlfriend on the Grossglockner in Austria after abandoning his exhausted partner near the summit. The conviction was based on lack of experience\, insufficient equipment\, communication challenges\, not turning back in time\, and a cascade of bad decision-making. This session will examine what happened\, the climber’s defense and justifications for his decisions\, and why the court found him guilty. The judge was a climber and mountain rescuer so offered a uniquely qualified perspective to the case. While Austrian law is very different from the laws in the United States and Canada\, this session will explore how the court established that the defendant owed his girlfriend a duty of care and how his actions fell short of reasonable alpine climbing standards.

SUMMARY:Resilience in the Mountains\, A Body Centered\, Nervous System Approach to Increasing Resiliency
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever felt paralyzed by fear in the mountains? Or felt the need to agree with others against what your intuition was telling you? Have you experienced a difficult or terrifying situation that has been hard to deal with\, even months or years after the event? When crisis situations arise in the mountains\, our brains sense the stress and the nervous system reacts\, often without our conscious input. These reactions may be unhelpful in a crisis. Instead\, when we can connect - to our body\, our environment and others - we will respond more calmly and effectively. Join me in an experiential exploration of the nervous system and how we can harness it’s power to help us stabilize any situation in the mountains and beyond.

SUMMARY:Vini\, Vedi\, VUCA\, Pura Vida – Navigating Health & Safety for International Programs
DESCRIPTION:We’ll provide an overview of the most salient challenges for operating/managing overseas programs in our current VUCA (Volatile\, Uncertain\, Complex\, Ambiguous) World. We’ll also look at the challenges of melding local competence (culture\, language\, sensibilities) with U.S. standards for health\, safety and security. Where disruption is one of the few certainties\, translating uncertainty into equations of risk becomes critical for decision making with implications for info acquisition\, flexibility and resilience. We’ll initially present a macro-overview of navigating health\, safety and security abroad\, and then look at how the principles and the realities play out in an Outward Bound program in Central America.

SUMMARY:Participants in Distress: Developing a framework for mental health response in the field
DESCRIPTION:Mental health concerns\, particularly anxiety and depression\, are on the rise in our society\, including across college campuses. Many outdoor programs\, especially those in collegiate settings\, can see the effects of this firsthand through the increase in both number and severity of behavioral and mental health related incidents in the field. At our program\, student guides are trained on mental health emergency response and given tools to use to help keep participants physically and emotionally safe in the field. In this workshop we will discuss the importance of being proactive around mental health incident response and how to support trip leaders in gaining confidence and competence in this area. Attendees will have an opportunity to share experiences and successes\, and will walk away with resources to help implement similar strategies at their outdoor programs.

SUMMARY:Contemporary Critical Incident Management Planning
DESCRIPTION:Effective critical incident management requires extraordinary capabilities precisely when organizations are most vulnerable. Research consistently demonstrates that during crises\, decision-making quality deteriorates significantly compared to normal operations. The paradox is clear: our need for adaptability\, clear judgment\, and leadership from both the field and the office peaks exactly when these qualities become most difficult to maintain. This workshop delivers a practical\, evidence-informed framework for developing robust critical incident management systems for outdoor and adventure programs. Participants will engage with realistic scenarios that highlight the cognitive and operational challenges that emerge during critical incidents\, while exploring proven planning methodologies that address these challenges and support the needs of a wide range of stakeholders. The session emphasizes that effective response begins with systematic preparation. Attendees will receive practical tools and templates for immediate implementation\, enabling the development of customized critical incident management plans appropriate to their specific operational contexts. By workshop conclusion\, participants will have the knowledge and resources needed to thoroughly assess and strengthen their organization's capacity to manage critical incidents compassionately and effectively.

SUMMARY:Cold Water Safety Best Practices - Avoiding Fatalities and Lawsuits
DESCRIPTION:The hazards of cold water immersion are well-documented and have been known for over 50 years. Despite extensive scientific research and a large number of close calls and fatalities\, tragic incidents continue to occur every year. Cold water close calls and fatalities are almost always preventable\, yet many outdoor programs and commercial outfitters fail to implement best practices. Fatalities are devastating to family and friends\, and also undermine the goals and objectives of outdoor programs. Wrongful death settlements alone can easily run into millions of dollars\, to say nothing of legal fees and adverse publicity. The keys to successful cold water risk management are awareness of the danger and following best practices for cold water safety. There are Five Golden Rules of cold water safety. Each is important\, but it's the combination of all five that empower you to build a robust cold water safety net. Recognition and application of cold water safety best practices empower program administrators\, trip leaders\, instructors\, and participants to enhance program safety through the assessment and management of cold water risks.

DESCRIPTION:Mental health concerns\, including suicide risk\, are increasingly encountered in outdoor and experiential settings. Many professionals have received training in approaches such as Mental Health First Aid\, which build awareness and confidence in supporting individuals in distress. In acute situations\, however\, the challenge is often less about identifying a specific diagnosis and more about how to respond and what to do next.

SUMMARY:NOLS Crisis Case Study
DESCRIPTION:Responding to a crisis\, such as a participant fatality\, is complex. It can also be stressful and chaotic. A crisis has the potential to overwhelm an organization's staff and resources\, threatening the ability to run programs in the short or long-term. Having a response plan in place that addresses foreseeable needs allows the people in your organization to focus on inevitable surprises and lays the foundation for a thorough and compassionate response. This workshop will provide a starting point for creating or refining a crisis management plan\, with a focus on the administrative response versus the in-field actions. We will use a NOLS case study to illustrate one approach to crisis planning\, and will also identify potential modifications for smaller organizations.

SUMMARY:Positive Masculinity: A Relational Approach to Managing Behavioral Risks with Boys & Young Men
DESCRIPTION:Current research suggests that boys and young men are experiencing increased rates of online gender bias socialization\, behavioral dysregulation\, and a lack of prosocial skill development. They need experiential programs more than ever. Yet\, mental health challenges\, social isolation\, rampant misogyny\, and the lure of the harmful version of masculinity found in the “manosphere” all present formidable challenges to educators working to create healthy group cultures in their programs. We are left with this paradox: how do we mitigate the social challenges young men bring with them into our programs while also nurturing and supporting them to be the best version of themselves? In this workshop\, we will explore common sources of male socialization\, the role of edgy humor amongst groups of boys\, and discuss accountability processes that will allow young men to feel supported while also being held to high expectations. Ultimately\, participants will leave with strategies\, approaches\, and tools to manage the risk potential young men bring towards themselves and others in experiential programs.

SUMMARY:Creating Influence as a Safety Leader
DESCRIPTION:Safety leaders in outdoor programs are often accountable for safety outcomes\, yet they have little positional authority to direct decisions or set organizational priorities. This is a structural challenge\, not a personal one\, and it's commonly faced by risk managers\, program directors\, and anyone who wears a safety leadership hat as part of their role.

SUMMARY:Bystander Intervention Tools for Outdoor Trips & Adventures
DESCRIPTION:Abuse\, bullying\, harassment\, coercive dynamics\, and harmful group behavior do not disappear in wilderness settings. In many cases\, isolation\, fatigue\, hierarchy\, and tight-knit outdoor communities make these dynamics harder to name and riskier to interrupt. This session begins by examining the context in which harm occurs\, including power\, identity\, social cohesion\, and the small-community dynamics that often shape silence.\n \n From there\, participants are introduced to a structured Intervention Ecosystem that clarifies when and how to intervene across the full spectrum. We move from pre-trip norm setting and prevention\, to in-the-moment responses with friends or teammates\, to responding when witnessing potential domestic violence or escalating harm on the trail\, and finally to leadership accountability and culture-level follow-through.\n \n Rather than offering vague encouragement to “speak up\,” this session provides practical decision frameworks and field-ready tools that help outdoor professionals interrupt harm without escalating risk or compounding shame.\n \n Participants leave with clearer thresholds\, concrete language\, and strategies to strengthen accountability while protecting both individuals and group integrity.

SUMMARY:Outdoor Classrooms In Transition; Navigating the Risks of a Changing Federal Landscape
DESCRIPTION:In the turbulent period since January 2025\, agency management of the public lands and waters that serve as our outdoor classrooms has changed\, and more changes are in the works. A few of these changes will create new opportunities for outdoor programs. However\, most of these changes will shatter management norms that have existed on public lands for many years. In their place\, the Administration will establish new norms that prioritize mining\, logging\, and energy development\, and increase access for motorized vehicles. Inevitably\, this shift will impact outdoor programs that take place on public lands\, as extractive activities and motorized use become visible in areas where we have historically provided programming or conservation work. This session will update previous presentations on the agency policy changes currently underway and consider how these changes will impact the risk profile and program effectiveness of outdoor programming that makes use of nearby landscapes. After we have laid out the current state of public lands\, we will shift into a discussion of how to apply risk management models to proactively assess these dynamic risks and allocate resources accordingly\, and invite participants to apply these models to their own organizational situations and programs.

SUMMARY:Beyond Imparting Knowledge: Mentorship That Builds Self-Awareness and Empowerment CORE
DESCRIPTION:Mentorship goes beyond imparting knowledge. It is about helping emerging leaders grow confident in their decision-making\, develop sound judgment\, and gain a deeper understanding of their own capabilities and limits so they can lead others safely and effectively.\n\nSelf-awareness and empowerment are often viewed as natural by-products of gaining experience and learning new skills. But what if we challenged that notion? What if we treated them not as benevolent outcomes\, but as concrete skills we can actively train and strengthen.\n\nIn this workshop\, we will explore practical techniques for mentoring with intention focusing specifically on how to cultivate self-awareness and empowerment as core leadership skills in the outdoor leaders you mentor.\n\n

SUMMARY:Tell Your Risk Management Story: How to Better Share Incidents From the Field to Sharpen Your Skills\, Strengthen Learning Outcomes\, and Enhance Your Career
DESCRIPTION:When you work in the field long enough\, you soon find yourself with a catalog of stories to tell at happy hour\, or around the campfire\, about the incidents and near misses you’ve experienced in your career. These stories can be challenging to share\, or quite exciting and fun. The presenters of this workshop will argue that storytelling is a skill that can be developed\, and is a skill that has immense value for guides and educators who both manage risk in the wilderness setting\, and teach others to develop their own risk management practices. First\, this workshop will give participants an opportunity to “tell” a personal risk management story. Then\, attendees will receive some guiding frameworks on how to increase the impact of their story based on the goal of sharing their story\, and the venue in which the story is shared. The discussion will prompt weaving the story into their debrief practices\, lesson plans\, and job interviews. This workshop will be of value for all attendees\, but may be of particular utility for earlier career field professionals looking to reflect and speak to recent incidents in their developing career.

SUMMARY:Self-Reliance in the Age of Field Technology: What We’ve Gained\, What We’ve Lost\, and What We Choose
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few decades\, field technology has developed alongside evolving expectations of safety and communication among our clients and participants. How has this also influenced our sense of self-reliance and our ability to make sound decisions in the field independently? Join us for a discussion on how these changes have influenced our industry and our sense of self-reliance\, what we might want to reinvigorate among staff working in remote environments\, and what outdated ideas perhaps no longer serve us or our clients?

SUMMARY:The Sociology of Risk: Identity and Meaning in the Wilderness
DESCRIPTION:The “FACETS” acronym is a widely used tool designed to help wilderness professionals avoid falling into heuristic traps. Yet accidents persist\, even among highly experienced guides. Rather than treating these incidents as lapses of judgement\, workshop participants will consider the following questions: What kind of person did this decision allow me to be at that moment? Which identities were being performed\, protected\, or threatened? What actions were or weren’t available given those identity commitments? Drawing on sociological theory\, this workshop reframes risk as not simply a question of rational decision making\, but as questions of meaning and identity. Heuristics are not just cognitive shortcuts\, but are socially patterned\, emerging through training\, organizational culture\, and cultural norms. Risk perception is not merely individual\, but produced through group dynamics\, communication\, and organizational culture. Participants will examine how situational pressures and organizational expectations shape judgment. Through guided reflection and discussion\, they will interrogate their own decision-making patterns and consider how “good judgment” is produced and constrained by identity.

SUMMARY:Short-Talk Series
DESCRIPTION:The short-talk series will have four presentations (of 18 minutes each) in this rapid-fire Ted Talk-style format!\n\nClosing the Coverage Gap: Participant Accident Insurance | Bill Smer\nThis session educates wilderness and outdoor risk professionals on how Participant Accident insurance strengthens overall risk management. It explores common injury scenarios\, explains where General Liability coverage falls short\, and highlights how Participant Accident helps address medical expenses quickly and regardless of fault. Using real‑world wilderness program examples\, attendees gain practical insight into how this coverage supports participant care\, reduces post‑incident conflict\, and complements existing insurance and safety practices—without replacing them.\n\nBelonging on the Border: Accessibility and Inclusivity in the Arizona-Sonora binational Sky Islands |&nbsp\;Katherine Gaia Barbaree\,&nbsp\;Xochitl Lopez\,&nbsp\;Karla Hernandez\nThe borderlands of the US Southwest are a highly politicized\, racialized\, and an increasingly militarized zone. How do we foster an environment of inclusivity and belonging that feels accessible and inclusive to those historically excluded from outdoor recreation and wilderness spaces? In this short talk\, participants will hear how one organization–Borderlands Restoration Network–develops and facilitates educational programs that transcend historical lines of who does and does not belong on public lands and outdoor spaces. In the mountainous Sky Island region of the Arizona-Sonora borderlands\, our education programs attempt to create and foster an environment of accessibility and inclusivity\, amidst a backdrop of larger\, dominating narrative that supports anything but.\n\nRisk Reduction PechaKucha: Soft Skills or Bust! | Andrea Kane \nA Short Talk in Three Acts Conveying Top Secret Soft-Skills-for-Risk-Reduction Tricks Learned Through 26 Years of Teaching Wilderness Emergency Medicine \n\nCrossing Borders: Managing Immigration Risk for International Student Travel | José González\nInternational student travel has become increasingly complex due to evolving immigration policies\, border enforcement practices\, and documentation requirements. Outdoor programs and schools now face additional risks when students cross international borders\, particularly when participants hold different citizenship statuses or visas. The session will examine emerging risk factors\, including customs searches of electronic devices\, changing travel restrictions\, documentation requirements for minors\, and procedures if a student is detained or delayed at a border crossing.Participants will leave with practical tools including a border-crossing documentation checklist\, staff preparation guidance\, and communication protocols for responding to immigration-related incidents. This session is designed for organizations running international programs in destinations where border processes can create operational risk.

SUMMARY:Keynote Address with Erick Cedeño | The Most Overlooked Expedition in American Outdoor History: Retracing the 1897 Buffalo Soldiers Bicycle Corps Expedition
DESCRIPTION:This keynote centers on the story of the Buffalo Soldiers Bicycle Corps and examines why one of the most ambitious expeditions in U.S. history remains largely unknown. It explores how narratives of exploration are shaped\, who gets remembered\, and how that influences participation and belonging in outdoor spaces today. Through retracing this journey\, Erick reflects on the role of storytelling in outdoor leadership\, the importance of representation\, and how revisiting overlooked histories can expand how we think about exploration\, risk\, and who the outdoors is for.
